New Zealand Car & Van Rental
This form of travel is the most convenient way to explore New Zealand, and can
also be relatively inexpensive. For international visitors, many airlines offer
“fly-drive” packages with the main car rental companies. There are an abundance
of car rental companies in the main centres, but choices may be limited and
rental prices greater in the smaller centres. Rental companies generally allow
cars to be taken on the inter island ferry, but it is best to check. Many are
able to offer one way rentals at no extra cost.
Rental prices range from as little as NZ$25 per day for an economy class car,
and are usually inclusive of insurance, unlimited kilometers and a breakdown
service. Most companies offer free transfers to and from airports for those
arriving by air. The minimum rental age is 21, although there is an additional
insurance cost for drivers under 25. A current driver's licence is required.
