Cycling In New Zealand
New Zealand’s roads are uncrowded and well maintained, and bicycle touring is a popular method of experiencing its spectacular scenery. Be aware, however, that there are often large distances between towns with very little in the way of accommodation or other facilities on the way. In city centres, bicycles are a great way to beat the congestion. Several operators in the main centres offer bicycle rentals at reasonable rates. Camping grounds and backpacker accommodation may also have bicycles available for local use.
New Zealand has some excellent off road bicycle tracks. An example is the popular rail trail in Otago, a 150 km track which runs along a disused rail line from Middlemarch to Clyde.
Wearing of bicycle helmets is compulsory.
