Things to do in Whangarei...
Zion Wildlife Gardens is unique in New Zealand and home to the stars of hit TV show The Lion Man. Check out the real thing! Get up close and personal with the Big Cats and learn about these magnificent endangered animals.

Tutukaka Wild Adventure Company has heaps of options looking out over the beautiful Tutukaka coastline near Matapouri. Children can feed and pet a large collection of exotic and farm animals. Everyone can relax in the café and enjoy the stunning views, or take the plunge and ride the luge. (Luge opening from December).

For a real treat, take the kids on the high-speed jet boat, Cave Rider and head out to the Poor Knights Islands and into the biggest sea cave in the world. Run by Dive! Tutukaka on the Tutakaka Coast, the Cave Rider excursion is a 2 1/2 hour combo of thrilling ocean ride, entertaining commentary, awesome scenery and natural history.

For a ride that's more gentle and focuses on history - try Captain Percy's Historic River Cruises along the Ngunguru River.

Town Basin Marina, Quayside is packed with fun for the whole family. Centrally located in the heart of the city, the marina is a stunning haven for international yachts. While you are there, check out Claphams Clocks - the National Clock Museum Burning Issues Gallery - craft gallery and live glass blowing studio, Fudge Farm Café for hand made local fudge, Town Basin Hire - try out the unique Orca Drive Aqa-cykle experience also kayaks, rowing skiffs, roller blades and scooters.

Relax at one of the family friendly cafés and restaurants - Mokaba, Mondos, Gybe, Reva's and Serenity while the children enjoy the playground and giant chess board.

Take the family for a real Bushwacka Experience. Ride 4WD on a farm and bush tour, try abseiling, rock climbing, go for a bush walk and check out the glowworms.

In the AH Reed Kauri Park, the children can hug ancient Kauri trees from the wonderful tree-top boardwalk.

At the Whangarei Museum and Kiwi House in Heritage Park on State Highway 16, you can see live kiwis in the Kiwi house, and visit the Clarke Homestead. On the special "Live Days" you and the kids can ride on the steam railway, experience bullock & sled rides, and enjoy other activities of a bygone era. This is also the location of the Native Bird Recovery Centre where you may get to meet "Woof Woof" the talking Tui!

Whangarei Falls is a great place for a family picnic with a swimming hole & lovely walkways. The Falls are known as the most photogenic waterfall in New Zealand.

Abbey Caves are extensive undeveloped caves in a beautiful bush reserve. See stalagmites, stalactites, and glow worms, wade through underground streams, scramble over rocks, squeeze through the "mouth of the dragon" - it is an unforgettable experience!

Check out The Paper Mill - this charming place allows you to experience the joy of making your own paper; guided through the process by the special papermakers who rise above their individual challenges to produce their inspirational product.

Unique in New Zealand, the Marsden Point Refinery Visitors Centre offers a free sound and light show, which demonstrates the activity of New Zealand's only oil refinery utilizing an extraordinary scale model.
